February 7, 2023, Class Update: Champions of Faith

Greetings everyone!

During our most recent class, we watched the documentary Champions of Faith: Baseball Edition, which I have shown regularly to my RE classes over the past few years.  It tells stories of MLB players and other staff on what faith means in their sports careers and in their lives in general.

Here are some clips from the movie if you want to see them again, or if your parents want to see them:

The activity for this week is to take a couple minutes or so to view a video news report on Pope Francis's recent trip to Africa.

Please select one of the following videos to watch:

This video is about a meeting with Pope Francis, young people, and catechists, in Kinshasa.

This video is about Pope Francis's meeting with the bishops of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This video news report is about a meeting Pope Francis had with leaders in South Sudan.

This video news report is about a group of pilgrims who walked for 9 days to see Pope Francis in South Sudan.

After watching one of those videos, please submit a short response at this link about what you learned.  This activity can be done in less than 5 minutes.  It is due by class time on February 14.

You get extra credit if you watch all four videos, and if you choose this option, please mention that in your response.

Looking ahead, in our next class, we're planning to have a guest speaker, and we'll continue exploring the various ways God is present to us.

As usual, please feel free to contact me with questions, etc.

We remain connected as One Church, living in God's Light and called to be Light to others:
All my relations.

God's blessings,
Paul

Last summer, while riding the Metrolink train, I passed by Angel Stadium of Anaheim, CA, within sight of the Anaheim train station. At that time, the Angels were playing a home game versus the Houston Astros.  This stadium made an appearance in the movie. May we strive for Heaven in the ball game of life.

P.S. Our opening prayer was the Gospel reading for this past Sunday, from Matthew 5:13-16.

Our closing prayer was 1 Corinthians 9:24-25.

I mentioned that the narrator of the documentary we watched is John Morales.  He has been in broadcasting for several years, and currently hosts the Morning Air program on Relevant Radio.

It airs live Monday-Friday from 6-8 AM CT.  You can access archives of the programs at this link.
